An Aussie's View of an Ulaanbaatar WinterIt has a little more drama to it when experienced by a lad from the southern hemisphere, who worked in some of the hottest areas in the world for the majority of his life.
The outback of Western Australia sets a few records itself - at the other end of the scale. And as a young surveyor, I experienced the worst of it all. Compared with these photos (some 28 years later) of the new working environment! For a few of the winters I have spent in Ulaanbaatar, I kept a digital thermometer perched outside on my 6th floor balcony window. Not that I needed reminding, but it gives a graphic picture of what the naked dogs and few remaining birds have to put up with. Some day I may do a similar recording over summer, but somehow it doesn't seem as dramatic.
