He's quoted in the Kalgoorlie Miner article as saying that he never expected to display such skill. He told the newspaper, "I just went down there to have a bit of fun. I thought I would be coming last and watching the rest of the competition." When he heard his name called as winner of the first event, the long jump, he was doubtful. So, it was even to his own suprise when he walked away with six awards, and an offer to go to Nottingham for the World Championships in Great Britain on July 19, 2001!

Damian continued, "When I was down there, one of the Australian Institute of Sport coaches asked me if I wanted to go further, which I definitely want to do," he said. "I have been asked to go to Nottingham for the World Championships in Great Britain on July 19."
