Damian's Victory

To Nottingham
|
Every once in a while, one of those stories comes along that tells you wonderful things about the human spirit. About determiniation and will. About commitment and belief. About making dreams come true. Damian McGay's is one of those stories.
After being selected for the Australian side for the CP Games in Nottingham, Damian and his family were overwhelmed by the support of the local people, the Government and the mining community in Kalgoorlie. The following people and organisations gave real aid to Damian, with either money, time or moral support.
While training, Damian was lucky enough to have met the Prime Minister of Australia, the Rt Hon John Howard.
In addition to his regular training on the Kalgoorlie-Boulder athletics track, Damian continued his personal bush-running regime (see photos in the Gallery). Damian has been very private about his track times, and rightly so. However, suffice it to say he continually pushed his PB's until about a month before the games, and then caught a chest cold. That made him "hit the wall" for a period, but he recovered on the eve of departure. It is now a matter of hoping for the best for the "Boy From The Bush"
